Workshop: WILDES KAPITAL/ WILD CAPITAL – DRESDEN – SOFIA
Both cities – Dresden and Sofia, have been and still are struggling with „structural change“, confronting this change with very different means, which can be roughly and categorical described as two versions of capitalism: a regulated, „civilized“ western version and a WILD unregulated eastern version. In Dresden the regulated urban landscape in the city center has been streamlined to a historical focus on the cultural heritage, very much in accordance with the city marketing guide lines of the day. The center of Sofia to the contrary very visibly has developed according to wild priorities of income rather than a concept of one single marketable urban identity.
In both cities the urban landscape is defined by very different policies, developing some potential and leaving other options neglected. Contemporary young culture is not part of the options in both cities, and denied access by income and regulations. WILD CAPITAL refers both to the basic mechanisms of the markets and to the CAPITAL or potential which is not compatible with the regulations of access.
