Games of Illusion - Representation of Contemporary Art from Eastern Europe
Cosmin Costinaş (author/curator/member of the editorial team documenta 12, Bukarest/Wien) discussing with Katrin Klingan (artistic director relations, Berlin)
in English language

"In the mid-1990s, they said I was from Eastern Europe. By the end of the millenium I was said to be from South-East Europe. Today the call me a "Balkan artist". But I have lived in Bucharest all this years." (Dan Perjovschi)

Art from the Balkans is a big thing today, especially on the occasion of exhibitions, which tend to use the so called "Balkan identity" as a synonym for the alien other. Various artistic strategies of discussion and oberservation, often made possible only by support from the West, try to get to the bottom of predominant concepts of determining cultural identity and forms of representation of art during the process of European unification.
