The Symposium on October 13 - 16, 2005 is organized by Prof. Dr. Marina Gržinić (Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna and the Institute of Philosophy of the Scientific and Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Science and Art) and Prof. Dr. Günther Heeg, Dr. Veronika Darian (Institute of Theatre Studies in Leipzig) for October 2005.

The aim is to give visibility to the proposed project of exchange between the Universities as it is developed above and in connection with IRWIN's "East Art Map" project in general. Contributors on the part of the university network will primarily be young researchers who are interested in different histories, art productions, cultural processes, social entities and politics of representation. The symposium also involves established academics who are used to work at intersections between disciplines and between theory and artistic/social practice. Their counterparts are the participating artists, who have made social and theoretical reflection a principle of their work. The symposium is supposed to be the starting point of a lasting practice in the cooperative triangle of arts, humanities and social initiatives.

The symposium will be held in Leipzig, a city of arts and research that is presently Germany's pivot between East and West. With the Schaubühne Lindenfels we have found a venue which has neither exclusively artistic nor academic connotations, but is a social centre of communication in the first place.

In the future, the network that we are setting up with the symposium and the publication can be seen as the basis for research of the former Eastern European Arts, with the idea to build a history through present while deepening the possibility of establishing contemporary art and cultural paradigms.
